In order to make this a reality, Adama Njie, director of Marketing – GTBoard and Mamadi Dampha, deputy permanent secretary at MoTC, on their recent visit to Nigeria met some strategic and viable partners, including Ambassador Ikechi Uko, organiser of Akwaaba African Travel Market and a seasoned travel and tourism expert in Africa, tour operators, airlines, and toured City of Badagary among other places in the country.
Dilating on a meeting between The Gambia delegates and Badagary Local Government, Lagos State, Nigeria, facilitated by the Ssupervisor for Environment and Tourism at Badagry Local Government, Adama Njie said it was a successful meeting where both The Gambia delegation and the host BLG used the opportunity to sell the potentials of Badagry and The Smiling Coast of Africa to each other.
Among the Gambia high points was the revitalisation of the regional market with Nigeria, how to bring back glory of The Gambia in Nigeria, incentive packages awaiting them (Nigerian tourists) in destination Gambia in terms of building 2, 3 star hotels in the hinterland and 4, 5 star hotels on the coast.
Also, Mr. Njie said both parties gave detail of their potential areas regarding history, culture, nature and business opportunities (in both Nigeria and The Gambia).
“It was an interactive meeting as we used it to discuss more tourism content and our potentials especially some of the country’s untapped opportunities like River Gambia, building of hotels both at the hinterland and on the coast,” Adama Njie stated.
Badagary, being an Ancient City, the delegates from The Gambia were taken on a conducted tour of different places at the Ancient City of Badagry including a visit to the First Story Building in Nigeria built in 1845 by Reverend C. A. Golmer, Badagry Heritage Museum owned by Lagos State and other historical places.
According to the office of the Supervisor for Environment and Tourism, Badagary Local Government, the high points of the meeting included “readiness to work strategically together/interested in the collaboration; philosophy without tourism; there’s no Gambia; continuous engagement on massive marketing of the two destinations; attending various exhibitions to sell products and services; reason for Gambia tourism growing well – is the unity that reigns amongst and constant awareness.”

]]>Burkina Faso’s hospitality sector is holding its breath after the cancellation of international events due to the coronavirus pandemic, signalling a significant loss of revenue for businesses in Ouagadougou.
Fespaco, the annual pan-African festival for cinema and television, was the latest event to be postponed this week over concerns about Covid-19.
The National Culture Week of Burkina Faso and the Ouagadougou International Handicrafts Fair already suffered the same fate, according to correspondent Yaya Boudani.
Burkina Faso’s hotel and tourism sector has been hit hard by the economic slowdown due to restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.
Hotel owners and restaurant managers were counting on international events to help keep them afloat and are calling on government support to help save their businesses.
“The sector isn’t doing well and tourists haven’t been coming for over a year now. These events were a source of revenues,” Célestin Zoungrana, president of the Professional Association of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs, told correspondent Boudani.
The cancellation of high-profile international exhibitions, a major source of revenue for the country, has forced businesses to seek assistance.
Zoungrana urged the authorities to review the situation with business taxes and try to provide some kind of financial relief to companies facing challenging conditions.
An inter-ministerial commission has evaluated the impact on the hotel and tourism sector, but with the cancellation of Fespaco, the authorities must revisit this and make necessary adjustments, according to Zoungrana.
Fespaco is Africa’s largest film festival and celebrated its 50th birthday in 2019. It attracts some 100,000 people each year, who see some 450 screenings.

]]>Airlink has postponed the resumption of its service between Johannesburg and Richards Bay until May 2. Services on the route were suspended in April 2020.
The delay has been necessitated by Richards Bay Airport’s inability to provide the necessary emergency services due to slowed economic activity in the town, which has resulted in a weakened demand for travel.
“It is a classic Catch-22 situation. Historically there was strong demand on the route, enough to sustain up to three flights every day. However, the Level 3 COVID-19 restrictions have the consequence that only twenty percent of the usual number of people are allowed to be on-site at the coal terminal, which is the industrial heart of Richards Bay,” said Airlink MD and CEO, Rodger Foster.
He said the Richards Bay Airport management had advised that the expense of providing the necessary fire and rescue emergency services required to accommodate scheduled airline services could not be justified until travel demand increased.

The partnership allows Airlink passengers easy connections into the Lufthansa and SWISS networks, with domestic connections at their hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Vienna. It also gives the two European carriers access to Airlink’s 25-plus domestic destinations in South Africa as well as its 20-plus regional destinations in Southern Africa, which can now be purchased on a single ticket
The agreement applies to tickets sold through LH.com, swiss.com and flyairlink.com as well as through local travel agencies.

Commenting on the need and relevance of a national carrier in the light of partnerships like this, Morné said any country trying to attract inbound tourism needed a healthy local carrier. “But with that, the emphasis is on a good healthy carrier. You can’t have the problems that we have been dealing with over the last year.”
When asked whether SAA was still needed, he asked if it made sense to add more carriers to the market in the current environment where there is a good local supply, with airlines that are operating successfully.

]]>The City of Cape Town’s Tourism Task Team has announced a ten-point tourism strategy to encourage recovery in the sector.
“With our ten-point tourism strategy, the City aims to help breathe life back into this vital sector, to help bring about economic recovery, just like many times before,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, James Vos.
The task team was established last year to support the hospitality and tourism industries through COVID-19 restrictions. The team enjoyed high levels of support from across the sector as well as from Cape Town Tourism, according to Vos.
“This ten-point strategy is a multi-pronged approach to help the tourism industry survive in the challenging weeks and months ahead as we get to grips with the evolving nature of a new reality, adapt quickly and think creatively.”
1. Adapt and implement the Comprehensive Tourism Bounce Back plan developed between City and CTT.
2. “Assist the tourism industry by unlocking immediate relief measures to address the severe cash-flow crisis many tourism businesses currently face,” said Vos. These measures include lobbying for extended UIF-TERS relief, rescheduling municipal arrears, continuing to offer guesthouses the option to be reclassified as residential to reduce their rates bill, and waiving lease payments by tourism companies renting property from the City.
3. Continue to lobby national government to responsibly ease COVID-19 restrictions.
4. CTT will continue to drive its successful domestic tourism campaigns to generate local demand for the tourism industry. These will run alongside the city’s destination marketing campaign.

]]>A new hospitality and tourism educational facility at a secondary school in Maun will benefit Botswana’s tourism sector.
According to Botswana Daily News, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Basic Education, Bridget John, toured the newly built facility earlier this week.
The publication quoted John as saying: “This programme is relevant as it will shape the future of our pupils once they complete their studies.”
The facility includes a mini-hotel with six rooms, which will offer students practical hospitality and tourism experience.
John said the new programme would transform the education system to benefit the business community, especially the tourism sector.

]]>While South Africa is the hardest-hit country in Africa for COVID-19 infections, the tourism entities (transportation providers, lodges and hotels, restaurants and shops, etc.) are doing everything right to ensure that guests remain healthy. This means that “at the present moment there are measures being taken that are logistically frustrating from a travel standpoint (limiting libations for instance, or constant flight changes)”.
So wrote Founder of the US-based Karoo Consulting, Brooke Berlin, who filed another trip report providing first-hand experiences and insider information for those sending tourists to South Africa.
“So, I still continue to feel safer in Africa, secure in what South African tourism entities are doing to ensure a stellar experience, and know that travelling as soon as one feels comfortable will be a welcome escape from being at home. And, the sooner the better when it comes to getting the royal treatment,” she wrote.
She highlighted that, with fewer numbers, now is when the most amazing room upgrades are happening (yes, always based upon availability), less crowded and more private activities are possible, and extra attention and pampering are felt.
Berlin was particularly touched by a comment from someone at the Steenberg Wine Farm: “People are coming here because they need to be nurtured, to feel cared for, and to leave the stress at the gate, so if we can go the extra distance to provide something that really makes people feel special and gives them space to relax, that’s what we’ll do.”

]]>Tourism activities will remain open during the 15 day lockdown which commenced on January 19 in response to rising Covid-19 cases and mortalities.
The Rwandan Development Board has said that tourism activities will proceed but under strict Covid-19 guidelines and measures.
According to a communique signed by Rwanda Development Board Chief Executive Officer Clare Akamanzi, tourism activities such as travel to national parks, museums and other tourist attractions such as city tours are open for international and domestic travelers under strict covid-19 measures.
Tourism firms and service providers facilitating guests are required to inform and share itineraries with the Rwanda development Board for clearance.
Travelers, including drivers undertaking tourism activities within the city and across the country are required to fill and submit movement clearance forms available on the Visit Rwanda Website https://www.visitrwanda.com/domestic-tourists-facilitation-form/ together with copies of their negative covid-19 test results taken not more than 24 hours before the trip.
Tourism establishments will be expected to apply for movement clearance for their staff on a weekly basis.
For summits, hotels are allowed to host essential conferences with a written approval by the Rwanda Development Board.
The development is expected to serve as a lifeline to the sector which has been going through tough times as a result of the pandemic and measures to curb it.
By maintaining continuation of some operations, the sector is likely to maintain jobs and maintain flow of income, albeit reduced, which could keep firms from closing up entirely.
As was the case prior to the lockdown and since the opening of the airspace, designated hotels are hosting arriving passengers as they await their covid-19 results.

]]>Air Peace has announced the resumption of flights into Dubai via Sharjah from February 5, 2021. This is as the airline has also increased its flight frequency to and out of Enugu.
Spokesperson of the airline, Stanley Olisa, disclosed this in a media statement, stating that the Dubai via Sharjah service would be operated once a week.
“We are delighted to announce that we shall be resuming flights to Dubai via Sharjah on February 5 and passengers can start booking on the website or the mobile app. Lagos-Dubai will operate on Fridays while Dubai-Lagos will be on Saturdays”, Olisa said.
He added that the flight frequency would be increased subsequently depending on observed passenger traffic.
“We urge our esteemed passengers to comply with all established COVID-19 protocols guiding international air travel”, the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Air Peace has also disclosed that it now operates additional flights into Enugu, hinting that these new flights are in response to popular demand and a reflection of the airline’s resolve to reduce the air transportation burden of Nigerians.
The airline had launched its second international route-South Africa- in December 2020, and has other international destinations in the offing, such as Mumbai-India, Guangzhou-China, Houston-US and London.

]]>Emirates has today announced a new re-accommodation policy for all its passengers affected by the cancellation of flights to and from South Africa, from January 16-28, 2021.
This was after Tourism Update’s sister publication, Travel News, reported yesterday that the airline had a re-accommodation policy in place only for passengers with bookings for January 15-18, leaving those with bookings from January 19-28 without assistance.
1. All passengers booked and ticketed to travel January 16 to January 28, can now be re-routed to any Emirates gateway at no additional cost.
2. All tickets may be re-routed to any Emirates gateway with an additional interline flight to the end destination (as originally booked) at no additional cost, subject to availability of interline partner flights/schedules.
3. A full refund will be made for unutilised tickets, as per COVID waiver policy.
4. Re-bookings for departures after January 28, 2021, maybe made at no additional cost, as per COVID waiver policy.
Emirates says all rebookings/re-issues must be done by the Emirates office.
