Capitalizing on warming relations between the United States and Cuba, a Vermont-based fishing retailer has announced it will host guided fly-fishing tours of the island beginning in October.

Orvis, the Manchester, Vermont outlet known nationally for its fishing supplies, apparel and other goods, has been working on making the Cuba excursions a reality for the past 18 months.

Company spokesman Simon Perkins says the trips will be classified as cultural, person-to-person experiences due to tourism restrictions still in place. Travelers will explore Cuba’s rarely-fished saltwater flats in addition to experiencing the country’s culture and natural resources.

Sen. Patrick Leahy says he’s “delighted” Orvis will be running the trip due to its Vermont connection and the company’s “exemplary track record of environmental conservation and sustainable recreation.”
