United will begin flying the new Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft on June 7.
The announcement follows the FAA’s certification of the Max 9 last week.
United will initially use the fuel-efficient narrowbody on flights to Anchorage, Austin, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and San Diego from its Houston Bush hub. On June 29, the carrier will also put the Max 9 on flights from Houston to Sacramento, Tampa, and Los Angeles, as well as on flights between Los Angeles and Honolulu.
United’s Max 9s will have 179 seats spread between two cabins. The United First cabin will have 20 seats in a 2-2 configuration. The main cabin will be laid out 3-3 with 48 Economy Plus seats and 111 economy seats. Economy Plus rows will be separated by 34 inches while the space between economy rows will be at least 30 inches, the carrier said.
Boeing’s launch partner for the Max 9 is Indonesia-based Lion Air Group.
United expects to take 10 Max 9 deliveries this year. The aircraft is the larger variant of Boeing’s 737 Max 8, which took to the skies with numerous airlines last year.
