It’s been a busy year for new luxury resort openings in Los Cabos and we’ve just posted a detailed review of the newest one–for now–Solaz Luxury Collection Resort.
Luxury Collection is one of the Starwood Brands, which means it’s now one of the 30-odd Marriott logos. It’s hard to keep up with all these hotel brands, with new ones still being announced each year. It’s also kind of confusing since the other Luxury Collection hotels in Mexico are haciendas in the Yucatan Peninsula, a far cry from this ultra-modern beach resort.
What really matters though on the corporate side is that you have some assurance of good staff training and management here at Solaz, plus you can either earn or use your Starwood/Marriott points when you book a stay. If you’ve got elite status with them, you might get some extra perks.
But what about the resort itself? How does Solaz stand apart in this increasingly competitive luxury market in Los Cabos? Well in this case, they’ve got a few key things going for them. They have a wide expanse of beachfront real estate, first of all, with a pool deck wide enough to accommodate an Olympic-length swimming pool running parallel to the sea. This is a very artistic, design-focused property, with stunning architecture and a couple hundred pieces of carefully chosen artwork. Staffers move through tunnels, Disney World style, so you only see housekeeping and maintenance when you need them.
The modern design is unique in this property, reflecting a contemporary Mexico City kind of feel rather than any hint of Colonial Mexico. The landscaping is very Baja too, from the giant transplanted cacti at the entrance to the native desert plants–no palm trees–that are endemic to this peninsula.
The rooms are thoroughly up to date when it comes to conveniences too and you get plenty of room to spread out.
The very smallest rooms at Solaz Los Cabos are about double the size of a standard hotel room, at more than 700 square feet. They have a furnished balcony or terrace, whirlpool, mini fridge, coffee maker, safe, and the latest and greatest technology available at the time of opening in late 2018. Tech touches include lots of regular and USB outlets, a sound system, 55-inch smart TVs, and electronic door locks with do not disturb lights.
Some of the rooms in buildings spilling down toward the sea have outdoor showers and plunge pools. We mentioned Solaz in a recent story on luxury real estate in Los Cabos and now some of the $million+ condos on the property here are in the resort’s rental pool. If you’ve got a big family, you might want to spring for one of those to get a full tower floor to yourself.
This new Los Cabos resort has an extensive gym, a full spa, and a wide array of restaurants. There’s even a museum on site focused on the history and animals of the Baja Peninsula.
