For several days, flights to Port-au-Prince from New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Fort Lauderdale are almost empty because of the crisis, violent demonstrations and insecurity in Haiti.

The Atlanta/Port-au-Prince route where the planes go in the air three times a week reported that some flights are only at 25% of their capacity, with the same finding on the Fort Lauderdale/Port-au-Prince line.

A situation that causes a shortfall for Haiti, worries airlines, foreigners and the Haitian diaspora who are reluctant to go home or postpone their trips in the hope of better days.

The loss of passengers has harmed the tourism sector while some new establishments have not yet broken even and are accumulating losses. Staff reductions have begun among some of those involved in the tourism sector and the risk of losing tens of thousands of jobs which this sector provides is to be feared if the crisis lasts too long.
