Airbnb is assisting hosts missing out on business due to COVID-19, by setting aside US$250 million to help them regain income lost as a result of cancellations.

In a letter to hosts in more than 191 countries, Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky, said: “We know that right now many of you are struggling, and what you need are actions from us to help, not just words.”

According to a 2018 report from Airbnb, there are around 7 500 active hosts in South Africa – all of whom could benefit from the support.

Chesky said Airbnb would use the $250 million to help cover the cost of COVID-19 cancellations for hosts. He said Airbnb would cover 25% of what they would normally receive through their cancellation policy for reservations cancelled due to a COVID-19-related circumstance, with check-in between March 14 and May 31.

He also announced the creation of a US$10 million Superhost Relief Fund. ‘Superhosts’ rent out their own homes and require assistance to pay rent or mortgages. Also included are those listed as experience hosts, who offer tours or activities and are now experiencing a loss of income. These categories can apply for grants of up to $5 000 that do not need to be paid back.

Chesky said there had been feedback from previous Airbnb guests who wished to financially support hosts through this difficult time. “We are creating a way for guests to send a note along with a contribution to any of the hosts with whom they’ve previously stayed. We expect this to go live in April.”

He also acknowledged Airbnb hosts who were offering housing for healthcare providers, relief workers and first responders, saying that 40 000 hosts had joined the cause thus far.
