IF poor reception is a pet peeve of yours when traveling on business, goTenna was designed to pacify those frustrations.

The device was created to allow users to connect with their travel companions even without a cell or WiFi signal. Weighing only 1.8 ounces, the device uses Bluetooth technology to pair with your smartphone and generates long-range radiowaves to connect with other goTenna devices.

Users can send each other text messages for free and share their location via pre-downloaded maps. The device can be used in out-of-range areas, on cruises, or simply when you don’t wish to be charged for international data roaming.

Last month, goTenna found a launch partner in outdoor equipment retailer REI. The start-up also announced that it has raised $7.5 million with participation from Walden Venture Capital, MentorTech Ventures, BBG Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, Wareness.io, Cellular One founder Kenneth Horowitz and Howard Finkelstein.

Founder and CEO of goTenna Daniela Perdomo said the funding has helped her expand the 13-strong team, as well as invest in product development, particularly in improving the existing hardware through updates to the software and firmware.
