Following my recent participation in Tianguis Turístico, Mexico‘s big annual tourism conference, I took a long ride in a Chevy Suburban from the sunny shores of Acapulco to Mexico City International Airport, where I hopped on an Aeromexico Connect flight to Chihuahua, the capital of the eponymous state. This is a review of my Aeromexico travel experience.
THE ROUTE: Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) to Chihuahua’s General Roberto Fierro Villalobos International Airport (CUU); Embraer 190; 1 hour, 50 minutes; economy class.
THE DEPARTURE: Aeromexico flights depart from terminal two — the newer terminal — at the Mexico City airport, and there was no line for the automated check-in kiosks, although I did need to wait for a wandering ticket agent to help me check my bag. There was only about a two-minute wait for the security line, so that was fast — although it was slowed a bit by the fact that, in Mexico City, you have to take out every single electronic item from your carry-on (not just your laptop; you need to remove your cameras, tablets and other devices too, and place them in a tray).
I wandered a bit among the small array of shops in Terminal 2 before heading to the departure gates for Aeromexico Connect, the airline’s regional service. For this flight, that meant going down a long ramp to a line of waiting buses, boarding the bus for a ride out onto the tarmac, and walking up the stairs to the plane. More scenic for photo takers like me, of course, but something to keep in mind if you need extra assistance boarding the aircraft.
THE AIRCRAFT: Aeromexico has more Embraer 190 aircraft — 38 in total — than any other single aircraft type in its fleet, according to the in-flight magazine. The Aeromexico Connect Embraer 190 was modern and very clean, with two seats on either aisle in economy class, and a 1-2 set-up in Clase Premier (this type of aircraft has 99 seats in all, according to the Aeromexico in-flight magazine). I took my rightful place in economy, of course, where crisply dressed flight attendants (are they required to have their hair pulled back, by the way?) handed out blankets to those who asked.
INFLIGHT SERVICE: Being a so-called regional jet, the Embraer 190 offered no in-flight entertainment (other than the Aeromexico magazine, which isn’t bad), but there is drink service, accompanied by bags of Mafer salted peanuts.
THE ARRIVAL: We landed on time at the Chihuahua airport, and the baggage claim delivery was super fast and efficient.
