American Airlines has made it easier for travel agencies to upgrade tickets from basic economy to standard economy.
American’s highly restricted basic economy fares are typically non-changeable and nonrefundable for domestic flights. However, the carrier does allow travel agencies to buy out of basic economy without a change fee.
Previously, such buyouts could only be accomplished via phone. But beginning with a notice that American posted on its secured travel agent portal on July 3, such changes can now be made online.
There are several buyout restrictions. Notably, upgrades from basic economy can only be done for a completely unused ticket, and the travel dates, times and destinations must remain exactly the same. In addition, buyouts must occur more than 24 hours before the flight.
Also, travelers may not buy out of basic economy to any premium seat, defined as one that is located outside the main cabin.
American, United and Delta all offer basic economy fares. The airlines have urged agents to clearly state the fare restrictions for basic economy at the point of sale.
Passengers with a basic economy ticket are not permitted to select seats and are typically the last to board the plane. Tickets are nonrefundable, non-changeable and ineligible for upgrades. American and United don’t allow basic economy ticketholders to use the overhead luggage bins.
