I’m sure you’re the type of sophisticated, educated traveler who knows that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day, right? (Even if you didn’t know that, you can pretend you did; I won’t tell anyone.) September 16, 1810, of course, is when Mexico won its independence from Spain. And a bunch of great Mexico beach resorts have devised some festive ways to celebrate the date (and the entire month, in some cases).

• Mexican Independence Day is no ordinary day at Barceló Maya Grand Resort. The resort kicks-off the celebration at the beginning of September with special decorations throughout the property. Special activities for kids include flag painting, piñatas and Mexican Bingo. The grand event is a Mexican music parade that features special performances, delicious Mexican treats, special raffles and prizes and even horse rides! In addition, the resort’s buffets will be serving a variety of typical Mexican food and snacks such as: chiles en nogada, Veracruz fish, pozole, enchiladas, tacos, carnitas, panuchos, mole and more. There will also be tequila and mezcal stations to prepare drinks with salt, chili pepper, chapulines and other distinctive elements of the country’s regions that make it more attractive. To conclude the festivities, the hotel will be live streaming the traditional “Grito de Independencia” straight from the National Palace.

• Secrets Vallarta Bay and Now Amber in Puerto Vallarta will offer plenty of opportunities to feel the spirit of Mexican Independence Day. During the day, the neighboring properties’ pool area will be hosting an entertainment contest, as well as have Mexican grill and Margarita stations, accompanied by the lovely sounds of Mexican mariachis. At night, the properties’ Grand Salon will be filled with Mexican food stations, a Tequila bar, mariachis and will wrap up with a patriotic Mexican show for all guests to enjoy.

• On Independence Day night, Sunscape Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa will host a Mexican Fiesta including a special menu with authentic Mexican dishes, such as pozole, tacos and a diversity of Mexican candies. The celebration will also feature on-going entertainment, from mariachis and traditional dancers taking over the floor, to spectacular fireworks towards the end of the night. All throughout the month of September, the Sunscape Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa will be properly adorned with Mexican flags and other patriotic decorations.

• On Saturday, September 15, The Iberostar Playa Mita will host a variety of celebratory events for guests all ages, filled with Mexican music, games, food & drinks. The five star, all-inclusive and family-friendly property will decorate its main lobby in traditional Mexican style, showcase Mexican folklore, offer Mexican games for kids and grownups, and host a special mariachi performance by its entertainment team, Star Friends. The night will also include the presentation of its famous Grito de Independencia to rightfully commemorate the country’s heroes.

• Thompson Zihuatanejo celebrates this national holiday with a taco & beer fest, full moon party, and endless activities and experiences that immerse guests in authentic Mexican culture. On September 15, the hotel celebrates with guest DJ Telesforo, craft beer from regional artisan breweries and a taco competition where taco aficionados can take part in judging three guest chefs that will showcase their talents. For more culture hungry guests, there is an open invitation to join Zihuatanejo and its big Mexican Independence Day parade that takes place downtown on September 16th.

• La Colección, a group of 12 noteworthy hotels located in the best beach destinations in the country, is celebrating Mexican independence day in a variety of ways:
