Johannesburg is full of surprises, and Tourism Update made an unexpected discovery in the heart of Craighall Park – Jo’burg’s own garagiste winery.

Wines are usually associated with the Cape and its world-renowned wine estates and tourist wine routes, but Gerakaris Family Wines has brought the essence of the Cape wine experience to Johannesburg.

The business was founded in 2008 by Kath Gerakaris, with the vision of bringing boutique Cape wineries to the Johannesburg market. “There’s nothing like this in Johannesburg – a winery that makes its own wines on site – and we wanted to bring the rustic wine experience from the Cape to Craighall.”

The family winery and venue offers wine tastings of its products, welcomes corporate bookings and team-building events, and can be used for wedding and birthday party venue hire – all within a tranquil and rustic-feel location. “With Craighall Park being so centrally located, yet tucked away enough to give that out-of-the-city feel, the winery is a quick and easy escape for a quick and quiet corporate meeting; or to bring your international guests through for an experience different to what they would expect from the very corporate feel of Johannesburg,” says Gerakaris.

Flanked by a café and a nursery with a coffee shop, the centre is great for a unique morning or afternoon out, tasting Jo’burg-made wines, having a bite to eat at the café, and enjoying a walk through the nursery.

Gerakaris Family Wines makes four wines – two from the Chenin Blanc varietal, and two from Shiraz grapes. The labels are inherently South African in design, and the wines are a family legacy, with all four being named after Gerakaris’s children.
