With its broad beaches and rather large Mexico beach hotels, the city of Mazatlan isn’t really a hotspot for travelers looking for boutique hotels. But there is one shining reason why it should be: Casa Lucila.
Set partly in a revamped historic home, Casa Lucila is likely the most elegant boutique hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico — and undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Mazatlan, in any category. Its scenic location on the waterfront Malecon in the Olas Alas neighborhood assures great views, while its location downtown provides walkable access to the restaurants, shops, galleries and attractions in the most historic part of the
THE STYLE: A few steps lead from the front sidewalk to the main lobby and reception, which sets the tone for the property’s overall style: handsome and thoughtful, with great attention to detail. This is one of those properties where everything seems to be perfectly planned. Elegantly furnished seating areas provide lots of space to relax.
THE HOTEL ROOMS: Casa Lucila has only eight guest rooms, guaranteeing a good staff-to-guest ratio. No two rooms are identical, and all have a view of either the ocean or the elegant courtyard. I stayed in Room 5, which is an expansive space coated in soothing tan, with high ceilings, a king-size bed and attractive wood furnishings. There’s a work desk, a table with two chairs, an attractive dresser and a large walk-in/walk-through closet that leads to the even larger bathroom, where high ceilings and natural light create a pleasing setting for the modern fixtures — a bowl sink, modern toilet and huge shower with rainforest showerhead.
The biggest selling point for Room 5, however, is the spacious shared balcony, which looks out on the waterfront and the Pacific Ocean. It’s peaceful, breezy and beautiful.
Free WiFi (which, unlike in some hotels, worked perfectly), extensive cable TV and air conditioning are among the in-room amenities.
HOTEL FEATURES: Original artwork by Antonio Lopez Saenz graces the walls, and Lucila’s restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch every day. There’s also a small spa with treatments priced at a reasonable $60 per hour. Casa Lucila Hotel Boutique also hosts a monthly yoga and meditation session, priced at $60 per person, that includes a healthy breakfast by the rooftop infinity pool.
Speaking of that rooftop infinity pool, it happens to be a perfect place to relax and enjoy the view.
As beautiful as Casa Lucila is, you won’t want to spend all of your time inside, however. A variety of restaurants and bars, as well as the historic center (which offers even more restaurants and small shops and attractions) are a quick walk away. This was the first time that I’d enjoyed the pleasures of staying in downtown Mazatlan, and it won’t be the last.

BEST FOR: Vacationers looking for an elegant, small boutique hotel with great views and plenty of amenities — as well as proximity to all the attractions and entertainment in historic downtown Mazatlan.
