Kenya is planning to target Chinese tourists in order to boost its tourism sector.

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) Chairman Jimi Kariuki said that for Kenya, China is one of those nations that has helped in posting double-digit growth of tourists in the past three years.

“We are therefore going to enhance our marketing activities in China, in order to cushion the tourism sector from fluctuations in tourist arrivals from our traditional source markets in the west,” Kariuki said on the sidelines of a tourism stakeholder’s forum.

He confirmed that China is one of the key markets that Kenya will focus in future. Kenyan Government data also indicated that in 2016 out of 874,385 international visitors in Kenya around 69,000 were Chinese nationals. This was an increase of 35% in Chinese Tourist as of 2016.

“According to our projections, we also expect to experience a 35% increase or more of Chinese tourists in 2017,” Kariuki said.

“However, over time we are seeing increased interest in the African continent primarily due to its abundant wildlife resources,” he added.

Kenya Tourism Board said that most Chinese tourists visit Kenya for the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve that is home to the annual wildebeest migration.

The tourism board also observed that the presence of direct flights between Kenya and China also helped in boosting the number of Chinese tourists visiting Kenya.
