Government of Kerala has decided to implement Responsible Tourism across the state.
The government gave the administrative sanction to launch the Responsible Tourism Mission (RTM) in July. The RTM is aimed at improving community level tourism activities and tourism- trade -community linkages.
The RTM will consist of Responsible Tourism, ethnic food fest, tourism resource mapping and art and cultural forum. Under the RTM, the state government is planning to conduct workshops from LSGs and other stakeholders along with the training program and capacity building.
According to the Kerala board of Tourism, the mission is aimed to provide result oriented training to various stakeholders like local bodies, community members, governmental agencies and non-governmental organisations. Few initiatives under the program include the introduction of new tourism packages and programs like Village Life Experience Package, RT International Conference and Summit and Kerala RT Network.
Newer projects like Clean Vembanad Initiative, Waste-Free Ashtamudi Programme and PEPPER (People’s Participation for Participatory Planning and Empowerment through RT) will be launched through RTM.
Kerala had first introduced Responsible Tourism in 2007. At that time, the Responsible Tourism Project was limited to only eight tourist destinations like Kumarakom, Thekkady, Kovalam, Vythiri, Kumbalangi, Ambalavayal, Bekal and Muziris.
