Mauritian Minister of Tourism, Georges Pierre Lesjongard, said that two proposed Bills, the COVID-19 (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill and the Quarantine Bill, would allow the government to restart the economy, which is currently at a standstill.
The Minister said the government had an obligation to save lives, save jobs, and ensure the safety of citizens as well as that of tourists in the future.
Although no new COVID-19 cases have been registered in Mauritius for 20 consecutive days, the curfew, implemented on March 23, has been extended to June 1.
The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) told Tourism Update that Mauritius was very much open for business as airlines and tour operators continued to accept holiday bookings in anticipation of the lifting of travel restrictions.
“We know the skies will open up again and that those travellers who have come to know and love Mauritius will get the opportunity to experience the island’s amazing warmth and hospitality,” said Arvind Bundhun, Director of MTPA.
