A NEW model of a mass-transit train-bus was drawn up and presented at the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC) last weekend.
The new Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) will have a passenger compartment on its top level while cars are allowed to pass underneath it. The bus sits above the cars without blocking the traffic below.
A video that has surfaced on Facebook helps to illustrate the movements of the TEB, and shows the “straddling bus gobbling up cars before seamlessly spitting them out”:

If applied on the roads, the train-bus – which will be able to fit up to 1,400 passengers at a time – could significantly reduce China’s traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions. China is the world’s leading auto market with more than 20 million new motorists hitting the roads every year.
With the absence of elevated tracks and complex tunneling, the design is also said to much cheaper and quicker to build than subway systems.
On Facebook, not everyone was pleased about the proposed design. Some netizens were more sceptical, stating the risks of careless drivers below could compromise the safety of those on board, as well as the design not catering to the passing of large trucks and rigs.
The concept was developed by Beijing-based company Transit Explore Bus.
