The South African Culinary Olympics team has returned from the world’s oldest and largest international culinary arts competition with three bronze medals.

The Springbok Squad competed in the 25th Internationale Kochkunst Ausstellung (International Exhibition of Culinary Art), also known as the IKA Culinary Olympics. This year’s competition was held in Stuttgart, Germany from February 14 – 19 and was attended by 2 000 chefs from 70 countries around the world.

“South Africa’s participation in this globally acclaimed culinary event has firmly placed the country on the culinary world stage,” says Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane.

In 2011, the Department of Tourism partnered with the South African Chefs Association to train more than 2 400 disadvantaged youth in the department’s National Youth Chefs Training Programme.

One of the graduates of the programme, Sifiso Chiziane, was part of South Africa’s team at the IKA Culinary Olympics. Chiziane currently works at African Pride Restaurant in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.
