Sun Country Airlines will launch five seasonal routes this summer that don’t touch its hub at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport.
The move is in keeping with Sun Country’s plan to diversify its network with point-to-point routes as it morphs into an ultra-low-cost carrier in the mold of Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant.
The new routes include service between Austin and Cancun; Dallas-Fort Worth and Las Vegas; Portland (Ore.) and Orlando; San Diego and Los Cabos; and Seattle and Anchorage.
Each of the services commences sometime in June and ends sometime in August. Frequencies range between twice weekly and five times weekly.
The routes are the first that Sun Country has announced that won’t involve Minneapolis-St. Paul since announcing plans last August to shift its operating strategy.
Expanding outside of Minneapolis-St. Paul will leave Sun Country less vulnerable to Delta, which has a hub in the Twin Cities, and less vulnerable to the growing Minneapolis presence of Frontier and Spirit, CEO Jude Bricker said when Sun Country revealed its strategy last year.
Sun Country implemented fees for carry-on bags in January.
