It’s not often that we describe a luxury hotel as being especially fun or playful, but at the W Hotel Mexico City, you can enjoy a whimsical decor and be pampered as well. Plus this hotel in the ritzy Polanco neighborhood has some of the best city views of any property in the capital.

When the W Mexico City opened in the 00s, the brand was kind of a novelty. It was unusual then to have a chain hotel brand where every property was different, was stylish, and would appeal to those in their 20s and 30s. Many others jumped on the bandwagon after seeing the W’s success, but despite this being one of 30 brands now in the Marriott conglomerate’s stable, the W still stands out, with a strong personality and name recognition. This Mexico City property is holding its own as we wrap up this decade, still the coolest large hotel in the capital.

This 237-room high-rise sits on the same block as a Hyatt, an Intercontinental, and a JW Marriott. You won’t mistake the W for one of those, however, at any point in your stay. There’s nothing buttoned-up and business-stiff about this place. As soon as you step out of your taxi, a local “cast member” in a slim suit (with no tie) and sneakers grabs the bags and hands you off to someone at check-in, past chairs in the shape of giant masks and an inverted pyramid.

On the same floor is the Living Room bar and lounge, a popular gathering spot for both guests and those working in the area that need to work out a business deal. You can order food from an eclectic menu here and try something from an interesting cocktail menu while lounging on interesting furniture.

Rooms look nothing like anything else in the city and they’re larger than at most other hotels too. Configurations come in a lot of shapes and sizes, but with lots of color pops, customized lighting, and comfortable sitting areas. Platform beds are lit underneath and large murals feature models clad in costumes that reference Mexican history in a new way.

Some are junior suites with a cozy sitting area that have a great city view from the bathroom. Others are duplex suites with a bathroom and bedroom upstairs, a full living room with dining table on the first level, with a furnished balcony to take in the cityscape. Then there’s a full-on rock star Presidential Suite that’s one of the coolest rooms in town, something that wouldn’t look out of place in Las Vegas.

The W Mexico City doesn’t have a pool, but it has a large whirlpool tub and some outdoor seating as part of the spa, plus there’s a well-equipped gym on site too.

The restaurant here serves all three meals, including a good (and relatively healthy) breakfast buffet in the morning. There are also dozens of others to visit in the area, with Polanco having a higher percentage of the city’s best restaurants than any other part of the city.
