SEVEN Malaysian airlines have come together to form the Association of Malaysian Air Carriers (AMAC), according to a joint statement released yesterday.

Malaysia Airlines Berhad, MASwings, Firefly, AirAsia Berhad, AirAsia X Berhad, Malindo Air and Berjaya Air are the founding airlines in the association. AMAC will be open to all Malaysian carriers.

According to the statement, the association will provide a common platform for the airlines to discuss issues affecting the industry, as well as to represent common interests among institutions such as the Ministry of Transport, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and the Malaysian Aviation Commission.

The report also stated that the association will engage in subjects such as enhanced air traffic control services, aeropolitical concerns, safety and security standards in airports, charging regimes and other related issues.

Last week, the DCA imposed a hike in fees for Malaysian airlines operating out of Malaysia. The rise would lead to a ten-fold increase in airlines’ monthly air navigation flight charges, which may result in a hike in airline fares.

However, after a meeting between DCA and airline companies, it was decided that the increase in fees would be staggered.
