The city of Quito has been recognised as South America’s Leading Destination by the World Travel Awards, one of the most prestigious and influential awards in the tourism industry.

The Ecuadorian capital also won in the category South America’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination, consolidating its position in the industry.

The results were announced during the World Travel Awards Latin America Gala Ceremony that took place at Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Mexico.

Veronica Sevilla, general manager of the Quito Tourism Board, said: “It’s an honour to receive such an internationally praised award and it makes all of us Quiteños very proud.

“Recognitions such as this one demonstrate that the world considers Quito a must-see destination in South America.”
Sevilla also highlighted the importance of Quito being coined as South America’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination.

“One of our core objectives is to strengthen our position in this industry, and this award proves our efforts are achieving results,” she added.

According to the most recent official data, international visitors to Quito totalled 314,183 in the first quarter of 2017, representing a 2.3 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2017.

Quito’s tourism growth is due to its ample and diverse culture, gastronomy, and art offering, as well as it natural beauties such as the Cloud Forest, and the city’s accessibility.

Some of the recent developments include the new Mariscal Sucre International Airport, additionally visitors can enjoy free and unlimited Wi-Fi in a number of public spaces such as plazas, parks and shopping centres, and a new fast and innovative Quito Metro project is expected to transform travel within the city.
