Carnival Cruise Line will all but eliminate free room service meals starting in mid-January.
The brand had been one of the last to offer the amenity at most times of the day.
Previously, Carnival assessed an a la carte fee of $2 to $6 on room service menu items ordered from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Now, the a la carte charges will be applied in the afternoon and evening. “Charges apply to lunch, dinner and late-night menu items while continental breakfast will continue to be offered free of charge,” said a statement on Carnival’s website.
Salads run between $2 and $3 while items such as wings, a Philly cheesesteak and pan pizzas run between $4 and $6.
In a post on his Facebook page, Carnival brand ambassador John Heald said the change was made because Carnival has a wider variety of complimentary food choices than in the past, and because it wanted to reduce food waste.
Until a year ago, when Carnival introduced the overnight room service charges, items from the room service menu were free around the clock.
