In a press conference cum luncheon, Tourism Western Australia hosted Mark McGowan, Premier of WA along with world-famous batsman Adam Gilchrist for an intimate introduction to the fascinating destination that is the largest state of Australia. Joined by India’s homegrown commentator-journalist Harsha Bhogley, the press conference was an insightful exercise in decoding WA’s hitherto unknown history, tourism opportunities as well as educational and job possibilities.
Unveiling destination Perth, the Premier embarked on succinct yet delightful factual introduction to Western Australia. Aptly supported by anecdotal accounts by Bhogle and detailed commentary by Gilchrist, attendees were taken on a vivid tour of Perth and WA by the dignitaries.
The Premier revealed that Perth has witnessed a growth of 12% in tourist arrivals from India, the highest among any Australian destination last year. The changing landscape of Perth, upcoming hotels across all budget ranges, better connectivity, etc. has resulted in the growth. At 30,000 Indian tourists and counting, WA wishes to attract more travellers through its marketing campaigns and promotional activities with the ultimate goal of strengthening Perth-India relationship. He further added Western Australians are great travellers, emphasizing that tourist exchange is going to be a two-way process.
To facilitate the process, WA is also looking at establishing direct flight connectivity between Perth and India, given the fact that Perth is in close proximity to the country and can act as the gateway to other destinations in Australia. Talks are on with Vistara, Indigo and Qantas.
Nishant Kashikar, Country Manager, India & Gulf from Tourism Australia threw light upon the ease of visa application. He explained that well-travelled business, leisure and MICE tourist can get their visa in as less as 7 days, making the journey hassle free.
Focussing on higher education and job opportunities, The Premier informed that Perth offers excellent professional degrees for students and a permit that allows every student to work in WA for a year after acquiring the degree, not offered anywhere else in Australia. Stock exchange, agriculture, oil and mining, etc. some of the popular jobs, he added.
The press conference was followed by a destination presentation and a candid tete-a-tete with all three dignitaries. Attended by select travel media and the travel trade, the event was a success.
