Alaska Airlines furthered its expansion strategy post-Virgin America acquisition, adding six new routes from San Diego.

Between late August and mid-December, the carrier will launch daily routes to Omaha, Neb.; Austin, Texas; Albuquerque, N.M.; Minneapolis; and Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo., bolstering its already extensive West Coast network.

The announcement came as Alaska prepared to launch daily service from San Diego to Baltimore on Wednesday and thrice-daily service between San Diego and Sacramento on Thursday.

It also follows Alaska’s announcement last week of a combined 13 new routes from San Francisco and San Jose using aircraft from both the Alaska and Virgin America fleets.

Once Alaska launches the new San Diego routes, it will fly from the Southern California city to 28 destinations.

Alaska will compete with Southwest on the Austin, Albuquerque, Kansas City and St. Louis routes. It will compete with Delta and Sun Country on the Minneapolis route and will be the lone carrier in the San Diego-Omaha market.
