ASTA is asking travel advisors in California to contact lawmakers and ask for a time extension to register as an independent contractor who is exempt from the state’s new labor regulations.
According to ASTA, travel advisors must secure a business license from their municipality by July 1 to qualify for the exemption.
“Given the severe disruption to our industry from the Covid pandemic, we think an extension of this date is warranted, and we are working with the CCTO and others to make it happen,” the ASTA said in its Travel Advisor Daily newsletter.
ASTA has created a grassroots portal enabling California travel advisors to easily contact their state legislator.
Last year, ASTA and the California Coalition of Travel Organizations successfully lobbied for an exemption to Assembly Bill 5, ensuring that they still could be classified as independent contractors under previous regulations that had been in place for years. Without the exemption, travel agencies wouldn’t have been able to use the services of independent contractors, upsetting a longtime business model in the industry.
