Bogota is a city where it’s easy to enjoy a variety of types of culture, history and art — as I like to say, there is a little piece of Bogota for every person and taste. I’m a university student focused on tourism and a Bogota resident, and I recently read an article about places that are “lost in time” in this city. One place in particular caught my attention, and I was even more surprised to learn that it is home to a museum that I’ve never heard of before.
I consider myself an art lover, and that’s why I’m writing this article with the idea of spreading the word about this incredible museum. If you’re planning a Colombia vacation or a business trip to Bogota, you won’t want to miss it.
El MaReA (Museo de Arte Erótico Americano, or American Museum of Erotic Art) is the first erotic art museum in Latin America, and is the work of a famous artist named Fernando Guinard, who created the venue to protect, preserve, promote and stimulate artistic expressions, and especially erotic art.
Tucked into a lovely house, the museum may seem to be a simple home, but it’s a lot more. When I arrived, I received a warm welcome from Guinard and his charming daughter. I immediately felt that freedom of expression was abundant here, as well as art in its most pure and naked form, with the human body a temple to admire in its most natural state.
The museum’s creator gave me a tour of the venue, taking me into every corner of his home as he told me the story behind every work of art in the museum’s collection, as well as the challenges he had to overcome in a conservative country like Colombia.
The Museo de Arte Erótico has been a source of support for young people who see erotic art as one of the most appealing forms of expression. The venue also aims to make a larger part of Colombian society, the part that casts a negative eye on pornography and erotic art, according to Guinard.
A beautiful poem accompanies each work of art, which inspires and elevates the viewer to a more complex level of admiration.
In my opinion, this excellent museum is worthy of both admiration and recognition, with a revolutionary way of thought that should never be censored. If you’re an art lover, you shouldn’t miss this creative paradise, where the languages of the body speak for themselves amid a family home that welcomes you with open arms.
