Flight delays are expected, as part of OR Tambo International Airport was evacuated on Monday (Feb 19) as the South African Police Services dealt with an unattended bag.

“From an airport operations perspective, we have returned to normal. However, we do anticipate some flight delays as a result of the evacuation. We apologise to clients, passengers, retail concessionaires and all other stakeholders for the inconvenience and ask that they plan accordingly,” said Airport Spokesperson, Leigh Gunkel-Keuler.

She said at this stage the airport was encouraging passengers and airport users to prepare for any possible delays this afternoon.

At the time the unattended bag was noticed, the airport’s Canine Unit, together with SAPS attended to the scene, reported Gunkel-Keuler.

“As part of the safety protocol and to ensure the safety of passengers and customers in the airport terminal building, people were evacuated from the area.”

Shortly after the incident, the SAPS gave airport management assurances that passengers and customers could safely return to the terminal building.
