A RECENT study by online travel agency Agoda found that tourists from Hong Kong and Taiwan are the earliest in the world to book their accommodation when traveling.

Agoda’s Travel Smart study showed that those from Hong Kong book their accommodation an average of 42 days before check-in while Taiwan tourists preferred to book their hotels 40 days prior to a trip.

Australian and Russian tourists tied with Taiwan at 40 days, while tourists from Sweden came in fifth place at 38 days.

Errol Cooke, vice president of Agoda said, “Those early birds may be on to something. Travelers who book early tend to have a better selection of properties, and a better selection of room types.

“There’s always a risk that plans could change but many properties have free cancellation now, so travelers likely won’t be out of pocket if they have to.”

At the other end of the spectrum, tourists from United Arab Emirates displayed a pattern of last-minute bookings, with an average of 12 days of advanced booking.

Travelers from Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and India followed closely and clocked in between 15 to 20 days.

The study was based on millions of bookings made by Agoda travelers in 2015.

Based on recent data by TripAdvisor, booking a hotel within three months of travel date in Asia is a safe bet to score a good deal, when travelers can save up to 23 percent versus peak pricing.
