During my most recent visit to Buenos Aires on assignment for TravelAge West, I spent a couple nights at the NH Collection Buenos Aires Centro Histórico, a centrally located property in the historic city center. Here’s a review of my experience at this well-located Argentina hotel.

THE STYLE: Sitting next to the larger NH Buenos Aires City Hotel, the Centro Historico property is a smaller, slightly more upscale property with handsome décor and a central location just off the Plaza de Mayo, around the corner from the cathedral, the Cabildo and the Casa Rosada.

The NH “Collection” designation, in general, indicates a slightly higher standard of luxury than the standard NH brand. The lobby at the NH Collection Buenos Aires Centro Historico is large and tasteful, and the reception staff was especially helpful. I accidentally arrived at the City Hotel, and the bellhop very kindly offered to walk me over to the property where I was staying. The style of the NH Collection Buenos Aires Centro Historico is on the contemporary side, but still comfortable and warm.

THE HOTEL ROOM: I stayed in room 1150, a hotel room so large and contemporary that it felt like an artist or photographer studio. Hardwood floors, one wall of floor to ceeling windows and slightly minimalist décor made the room especially attractive. It has the usual amenities like minibar, safe deposit box, wall-mounted TV, comfy king-size bed and work desk. But I especially liked the dramatic chaise lounge and the two giant egg-shaped lamps by the side of my bed.

Also extremely impressive was the giant bathroom, a spectacularly sized room that has as a centerpiece a large Jacuzzi tub. Behind frosted glass doors you’ll also find a water closet and a large walk-in shower. Dual sinks and comfy bathrobes round out the offerings.

HOTEL FEATURES: WiFi is free throughout the property and my room rate included free breakfast. There’s a pleasant, uncrowded gym with floor-to-ceiling windows.

The hotel has a rooftop outdoor pool, which was unfortunately closed for the fall season when I stayed — but the hotel pool is a big selling point during the summer months in Buenos Aires.

Another big selling point is the location. The hotel is located just off the Plaza de Mayo, around the corner from the cathedral, the Cabildo and the Casa Rosada, where the president sits. It’s an ideal spot for walking to some of the city’s most famous tourist attractions.

ROOM RATES: About $193 and up.

BEST FOR: Travelers taking a business trip or Buenos Aires vacation who want a full-service hotel that’s exceptionally close to all the attractions in the historic city center.

HOW I TOURED BUENOS AIRES: Borello Travel & Tours puts together customized and group tours in Buenos Aires, including vacation packages that include extremely good room rates at various hotels, based on your taste and budget.

HOW I GOT THERE: I flew United Airlines, on the amazing new United Polaris business class service, which is now available on nonstop flights between Newark and Buenos Aires.
