InterContinental Hotels Group has bought luxury hotel operator, Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas. The US$300 million (R4,2bn) cash acquisition includes all of Six Senses’ brands and operating companies but does not include any real estate assets.

The acquisition takes IHG’s portfolio of hotels to 400, and also extends IHG’s reach in locations such as the Maldives, the Seychelles, Yao Noi in Thailand, Zighy Bay in Oman, and Portugal’s Douro Valley.

IHG hopes to grow Six Senses to more than 60 properties globally over the next 10 years. This includes bringing Six Senses to urban markets, with a property already under construction in West Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City.

Six Senses Hotels Resorts and Spas currently manages 16 hotels and resorts and a further 18 management contracts have been signed into its development pipeline. They include two properties for upscale resort brand, Evason, with a further 50 deals under active discussion.
