Kenya’s Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Najib Balala, has expressed concern over the grazing of cattle in the popular Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Balala pointed out that, apart from the large number of cattle grazing in the park, it also faced challenges of overdevelopment and environmental degradation.

Of late, he added, wildlife in the Mara had been facing difficulties in free movement after private landowners fenced their plots, thereby blocking the migratory routes.

Balala urged the Narok County Government, which manages the reserve, to address the problems dogging the Mara to save the park from losing its popularity.

“The Mara is a wildlife paradise, but the challenges of cattle grazing in the reserve and environmental degradation are affecting the ecosystem,” he added.

He said that unless the challenges were addressed as a matter of urgency, the man-made problems could affect visitor numbers.

Although wildlife conservationists have been raising alarm over the thorny issues of cattle grazing and the fencing of migratory routes by private landowners, a solution is yet to be found.
