The café – the world’s first 24-hour Hello Kitty-themed restaurant – is set up in the public area of the airport and heavily features orchids in line with its “Orchid Garden” theme.

Foods such as waffles, vegetables and bread are served in the shape of Hello Kitty; however, the food here is said to cater to looking good in photos, and less to the palate.

The café also includes a retail section, which sells over 500 limited-edition plush toys at SGD49.90 (US$36) each.

Hello Kitty cafés are a phenomenon the world over with outposts in big cities like Beijing, Seoul, Hong Kong and California.

Hello Kitty experiences around the world aren’t limited to cafes. In Japan, the Hello Kitty flagship store features a larger-than-life statue while the Lotte Hotel in Seoul features a Hello Kitty-themed room.

But perhaps the most bizarre of Hello Kitty experiences is a themed maternity hospital in Taiwan, with the popular character featured on blankets, staff uniforms and birth certificates.

Hello Kitty is a ubiquitous fictional icon that’s played a big role in Japan’s popular ‘kawaii’ culture. Contrary to popular belief, Hello Kitty is a manifestation of a human child rather than a cat.
