Buoyed by an investment led by former Midwest Express CEO Timothy Hoeksema, the business-centric air service provider OneJet will open a base in Milwaukee this fall.
OneJet charters more than 160 regularly scheduled flights per week between its base in Pittsburgh and eight mid- and small-market airports in the eastern half of the U.S. The flights, which are operated with seven-seat Hawker 400XP turbojet aircraft, fly on weekdays only and make use of the same commercial airport terminals as major carriers.
Milwaukee is currently among the cities to which OneJet schedules flights from Pittsburgh. But beginning Nov. 1, OneJet will also market two flights per weekday between Milwaukee and Columbus, Ohio, and Milwaukee and Omaha, Neb.
The Milwaukee expansion comes with the assistance of Hoeksema, whose investment group made what OneJet called, “a significant seven-figure investment.” The company declined to provide a specific figure.
OneJet-branded flights typically service markets that aren’t connected nonstop by major carriers, in some cases as a result of those carriers’ elimination of hubs over the past decade or due to airline consolidation. The company said that its flights typically cost $20 to $40 more each way than the one-stop fares for the same city pairs that are offered by commercial carriers. Along with Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, OneJet currently flies to Indianapolis; Hartford, Conn.; Cincinnati; Richmond, Va.; Louisville, Ky.; Albany, N.Y.; and Providence, R.I. Airfares include WiFi and snacks. OneJet is a member of TSA Precheck.
OneJet’s growth in Milwaukee coincides with an effort to bring a new Midwest Express to Wisconsin’s largest city. The carrier, which was known as Milwaukee’s hometown airline, stopped flying in 2009.
However, after unveiling a Midwest Express website in early August, the backers of the concept have been largely silent. Curt Drumm, a principal of the venture, had said the company would provide additional information by late August, but it has not yet done so.
