United Airlines has stopped serving foie gras at its invitation-only Classified restaurant in Newark Airport following a complaint from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the organization says.

In most foie gras production, ducks or geese are force-fed a grain mash through a tube over a period of weeks, causing their livers to swell to up to 10 times their normal size. The resulting product is rich and buttery. France is the world’s largest producer and consumer of foie gras.

The production of foie gras is banned in many countries and the state of California.

“In thanks for the compassionate decision, PETA is sending the airline a box of delicious duck-shaped vegan chocolates,” PETA said in a statement Wednesday.

United referred a request for comment to the airport concessionaire OTG, which manages Classified in partnership with the airline. OTG did not immediately respond to a Travel Weekly inquiry.

United and OTG opened Classified within Newark’s Terminal C in August. Dining at the restaurant is reserved for invited guests — typically the most well-traveled members of the carrier’s United Plus loyalty program.
