Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. said it will become a 40% partner in a joint venture to upgrade the primary cruise pier and terminal in Malaysia.

The project to improve the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal in George Town calls for lengthening the berthing space from its current 400 meters to 688 meters to accommodate larger ships.

In addition, the redevelopment will include spaces for tour buses to ease the flow of traffic in the areas around the terminal and accessibility upgrades for disabled and older passengers.

The majority partner in the project is the port operator, Penang Port, but the venture will be jointly managed by both parties, RCCL said.

Royal Caribbean is scheduled to make 38 calls in Penang in 2017.
