Hotel chains are continuing their push to get customers to book stays directly with the company instead of through a third party. Last year, Hilton announced that Hilton HHonors members would get a special rate of up to 10% off select stays, and earlier this month, Marriott announced that Marriott Rewards members would get a members-only exclusive rate of at least 2% on weekdays and up to 5% on weekends. Now Hyatt is the latest to jump on the trend.
As always, it’s best to check other rate options when booking directly through a hotel — especially AAA rates, which can often save members much more on their stays.
Sample Bookings
At the Hyatt Centric The Loop Chicago, rates for a two-night stay in June were going for $339 per night in a Hyatt King room. For the same dates, the Hyatt Gold Passport rate was $307 — about a 9% discount. The AAA rate for the same dates was $307 — the same as the member discount. Note that in the screenshot below, the “Standard Rate” of $329 applies to a different room type.
The Hyatt Place Washington D.C./National Mall was going for $399 per night for a two-night stay in June without any discounts. With the member discount, the rate dropped to $380 (a 5% discount) and $359 with the AAA discount (a 10% discount). In this case, the AAA rate will get you the better deal.
At the Park Hyatt Toronto, rates for a two-night stay in July were going for CAD$409 (~$318). Member rates were going for CAD$401 (~$312), a 2% discount, and AAA rates were going for CAD$369 (~$287), a 10% discount. The AAA rate is the better option in this example, as well.
In my brief search, the only property I came across where the Hyatt Gold Passport rate was less than the AAA rate was at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina in San Diego. Of course, that’s not to say that there aren’t other properties out there where you’ll find this, but this was the sole instance I saw where you’d save more with the member discount — and it was a $3 difference.
Bottom Line
Unfortunately, the member discount it only available at properties in the US, Canada and Australia. Hopefully in the future, Hyatt expands its reach in making more properties available for this discount. Although it’s not always the best deal, it’s still nice to have the option of using your Hyatt Gold Passport membership as a way to get discounted rates.
