UNITED AIRLINES has restarted non-stop direct flights from Singapore to San Francisco after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, and will save passengers up to four hours of flight time each way.

The direct flight – a 16-hour and 20-minute trip aboard a Boeing 787 Dreamliner – is the longest scheduled route by flown by an American airline, and the longest B-787 flight on any airline.

According to Straits Times, the demand for Singapore-US flights has been growing rapidly; from 2010 to 2014, passenger traffic between the two markets grew by an average of four percent each year.

Business and independent travelers have contributed to the demand of Singapore-US flights. Jane Chang, a spokesperson for Chan Travel Brothers, told TTG Asia that the time-saving is a clear advantage for business travelers.

Previously, passengers have had to transit at Tokyo or Hong Kong to fly into San Francisco. United Airlines is currently the only carrier to offer a direct service to the US from Singapore.
