I’ve lived by the Atlantic Ocean for 30 years and I’ve been swimming in it 4 months out of the year for all this time without the slightest fear that a shark might attack me. I know they exist, but I’ve never seen one myself and I’ve never heard of one attacking anyone in the area. Yet, many people seem to succumb to the fear that sharks are lurking around every beach in the world, ready to snack on some tender legs and arms.
It’s time for people to get their facts straight.
According to Sharkproject, 200 million sharks — about 550,000 per day — are killed by people. Not the opposite. Worldwide, in 2015, only 98 people were bitten by sharks and six were killed, reports National Geographic. We’re much more dangerous to them than they are to us.
Also, to prove the silliness of the frenzy people get into when mentioning shark attacks, we’re more likely to get killed by beds (falling out of bed kills 450 people a year in the US alone), bathtubs (300 peopled drown in them every year), and chairs; yet I don’t see anyone freaking out about how life-threatening taking a nap, having a bath, or sitting down for lunch is. It’s time to rethink how dangerous sharks really are.
