The Uganda Hotel Tourism and Training Institute (UHTTI) has begun reconstruction work. The centre, which includes a hotel and training centre, is in Jinja, Uganda, and is housed in the Crested Crane Hotel building. It offers training within the tourism sector to help the workforce meet global standards.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 25, and construction has now officially begun. The project, which is in its first phase, is funded by the World Bank with an amount of US$6.8m (€5.6m).

The three-star hotel will have 50 rooms, and will include training centres for kitchen and restaurant staff, language laboratories, courses for hotel management and other hospitality-related vocations. The project will also include a review of the current UHTTI curriculum.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, UHTTI Board Chairperson, Patricia Sempa, said: “Today marks a new beginning as we usher in an institution that produces highly qualified and competent human resources for the hospitality industry.”

The reconstruction comes as tourism takes over major agricultural industries as one of the country’s top foreign exchange earning sectors. Currently, tourism in Uganda brings in around US$1.4bn (€1.2bn) annually.
