Mexican discount carrier Volaris will launch service from Los Angeles to Acapulco on Dec. 19.

The weekly route will be the lone nonstop offering between Acapulco and the U.S. West Coast. Volaris will operate the flight on Tuesdays.

United, flying from Houston, is currently the only carrier offering flights between the U.S. and Acapulco, which was once among Mexico’s most glamorous resort towns.

The Acapulco-Los Angeles flight comes amid new investments in the Acapulco tourism industry.

The Xtasea zipline, one of the largest over-the-ocean ziplines in the world — opened last year. Next year, Acapulco is slated to open a new airport terminal designed to welcome more than 1.3 million visitors per year.

Acapulco has lost out in recent decades to Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Cancun, in part due to drug violence.

Volaris said it plans to increase its LA-Acapulco frequency to more than weekly sometime in 2018.
