MIREYA RAMOS IS THE founder of Mariachi Flor de Toloache, a mariachi band that is changing the genre by having all female members. The group also sings in both Spanish and English, mixing traditional mariachi ballads with new-school original tracks and covers played with mariachi-style instruments (one of their most famous covers: Nirvana’s “Come as You Are”).

Though mariachi music originated in Mexico, the band members come from all over: Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Australia, Germany, and more. They were nominated last year for a Latin Grammy for “Best Ranchera Album” and continue to perform throughout the United States (they’re based in New York).
