Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks) rangers were involved in a 30-minute shootout with poachers on Saturday, May 26, in Hwange National Park.
The team of rangers tracked down the poachers after hearing gunshots. They came upon the poachers de-tusking an elephant bull they had killed. The shootout ensued.
Tinashe Farawo, Zimparks Spokesperson, said two tusks and a rifle were recovered from the scene. “The poachers were armed with a .303 rifle, and our trained unit battled it out with them. They fled from the scene,” explained Farawo. “We have leads and we are tracking them. Our call is clear – we will wipe out all poachers soon.”
This latest incident comes after a 50% decrease in poaching activities in the country in the first quarter of 2018 compared to last year, according to Zimparks. This is largely attributed to Zimparks Director General Fulton Mangwanya, who has created reaction units in an attempt to scourge the onslaught.
