Frontier Airlines will begin service in 21 new destinations by the summer of 2018, an increase of approximately 30%.

The Denver-based ultra-low-cost (ULCC) carrier will have 85 new routes, including 49 that went on sale this week.

When the expansion is complete, Frontier will service 82 cities, which the airline says account for 90% of the U.S. population.

“We project this will save our customers over a billion dollars annually on their flights,” Frontier CEO Barry Biffle said. “These new flights will allow us to serve even more of America and make flying a truly affordable option.”

Frontier will expand the most at its Denver base, with six new routes already on sale and another 15 flights slated to begin next spring.

Other cities that will see significant expansions in Frontier service are Austin (eight new routes), Islip on New York’s Long Island (eight), Miami (nine) and Tampa (11).

Among the 21 new cities, 16 are destinations where Frontier once flew. The carrier will add Buffalo, N.Y.; Charleston, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Ontario, Calif.; and Pensacola, Fla., for the first time.

The cities where Frontier will resume service are Albuquerque, N.M.; Boise, Idaho; Calgary, Alberta; El Paso, Texas; Fargo, N.D.; Fresno, Calif.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Little Rock, Ark.; Louisville, Ky.; Oklahoma City; Palm Springs, Calif.; Reno, Nev.; San Jose, Calif.; Spokane, Wash.; and Tulsa, Okla.

With its 21-city expansion in Denver, Frontier will place renewed emphasis on using its home-base as a connecting hub. The carrier had de-emphasized Denver over the last few years as it shifted to a ULCC business model with a point-to-point flight network.

“Customers will benefit not only from the broad new selection of nonstop routes, but our growing network will provide more than 1,000 new connecting route options,” Biffle said. “By taking advantage of our natural share of connecting passengers, we can offer our low fares to even more of America. This is particularly important through our largest hub and our home in Denver.”
