A NEW smartphone app was designed to guide Muslim travelers towards halal food options when traveling.

Have Halal Will Travel (HHWT) is a free app that allows users to find halal places they want to visit, as well as add them to an itinerary.

HWTT started out as a website last year, and serves as a travel guide for Muslim travelers to scope out halal food options, nearby mosques, and points of interest with Islamic history.

The guide was founded by Melvin Moh, Tengku Suzana and Elaine Tee after finding it difficult to find halal food when traveling to Seoul on a six-month exchange program.

Suzana said, “In a nutshell, we’re trying to inspire Muslims to see the world. Our mission is to make it easier for Muslims everywhere to explore different countries.”

Findings by Amadeus presented at the recent Arabian Travel Market revealed that the halal travel market is set to grow by 50 percent in volume and 35 percent in value by 2020.

Halal travel is also expected to hit 150 million travelers with an estimated spending of US$200 billion by 2020. It’s one of the fastest growing travel segments in the world, growing at 4.8 percent against the industry average of 3.8 percent.

Antoine Medawar, vice-president for the Middle East and North Africa at Amadeus, said, “Halal travelers are a demographic that represents a powerful opportunity. This is a group of individuals and families that have certain unique requirements of their destinations and travel service offerings.”

The report on halal travelers highlights three core themes that span the key drivers of travel – cultural experiences, accommodation needs and activity preferences.
